What is a postpartum doula?

Navigating the first few days and weeks with a new baby can be anything but easy - even if this bub is not your first. Every new baby brings a change of routine, a change to the family dynamic...and a whole host of other changes that require adjustment and some juggling.

And, if mum has had a c-section - planned or not - or any birth complications, the transition to home from hospital can be even more challenging. Did you know that help is available to support your family through these first few weeks? A post-partum doula.

What Is A Postpartum Doula?

A postpartum doula provides evidenced based information and support on things such as infant feeding, emotional and physical recovery from birth, mother–baby bonding, infant soothing, and basic newborn care.

A postpartum doula is there to help in those first days and weeks after bringing home a new baby. Research shows that mums, dads and babies have an easier time with this transition if a good support team is in place.

A postpartum doula can offer many different services to clients, but their main goals are to help “mother the mother” and nurture the entire family as they transition into life with a newborn. This would include doing things to help mum and dad feel more confident in their roles, sharing education on family adjustment, and tending to the unique needs of a new mother.

A postpartum doula will work individually with you to determine your particular needs.

As an example, postpartum doulas may:

  • Help with physical and emotional recovery post birth
  • Breastfeeding/lactation support
  • Light housekeeping, childminding, running errands, preparing meals
  • Assistance with learning how to bathe, feed, comfort, settle/soothe, care for baby

Typically, you can engage a postpartum doula for anywhere from a few days up to a few weeks after bringing your new baby home. Every doula offers different services, so it’s important that your family decide what your needs are and find a doula who can meet those needs.
